Avoid These Hiring Mistakes at all Costs!

As recruiters, we’d like to think that we are pretty good at what we do. After all, we talked to literally hundreds of people all week long and successfully match them up with great jobs. But, as humans, we are not immune to making mistakes. And these mistakes can cost us an amazing candidate.

Here are some of the things that a professional recruiter should avoid at all costs.

Failure to plan ahead for hiring

It can be easy to get caught in the trap of constantly being on-the-go. However, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is to forget to plan ahead for your staffing needs. Taking the time to forecast staffing requirements for the company doesn’t have to be a complex process. But it’s something that should be a continual practice in order to maintain a reasonable staffing budget and to avoid potential staffing shortages in the future. It’s part of being a responsible member of the operational team.

Not building a positive corporate brand

Today’s candidates are looking for more than just a job — they are looking for the opportunity to work with well-respected companies in the industry. Therefore, a big part of what you do as a recruiter is to create a brand for your company. After all, you are the one out in the field and often the very first contact that people have with the company. Failure to build on a positive corporate brand can result in candidates looking the other way for positions. Worst yet, your company could end up on a review site with a negative review. Take the time to be a positive brand ambassador for your company every chance you get.

Focusing too much on the “perfect” candidate

As hiring managers, we are generally looking for a specific type of person to fill each position. But it’s never a good idea to be stuck in preconceived notions of what the perfect candidate looks like n our mind. This can lead to trouble. Instead, it’s important to be open to different types of candidates to bring their own skills and unique experiences to the table. Diversity is something to be embraced, therefore as recruiters, we should foster this within our organization. Let’s break out of the box and start hiring people who have something different to offer.

Neglecting to conduct a complete screen on all candidates

Horror stories abound about companies that failed to conduct a thorough background check on a candidate, only to find out that he or she had a major criminal history. It is never a good idea to skip out on conducting screens for all candidates. There are a number of things that could be missed.  For example, job history could be wrong or the candidate may not have the education that they claim they have. You never want to get into a situation where you have hired somebody and then find out later that they were not qualified for the position or had something risky and their background.
