As you are looking for a job or a better job, you’ve probably not been thinking much about the quality of life you are creating for yourself. Just getting a job and earning a decent living are the things on your mind. But, what about work life balance? Is this something that you should also set your sights on?
Work-Life balance – is it real?
You may scoff at the idea that there is any real work life balance. Careers are always pulling you in one direction while personal lives and family responsibilities pull in the opposite direction. It’s this constant conflict that can leave people feeling overwhelmed, stressed out, and unbalanced.
The truth is, work-life balance means different things to different people. For you, having more balance between your job and life could be about spending more time with your kids. Or, it could mean finally having the time to pursue that college degree you’ve always dreamed of. This is a personal concept and therefore you need to think about what it means to you.
When searching for a new job, it’s important to not only weight the compensation package and work hours they are offering. You also want to be thinking about the way the job may impact your daily life. Some things that can throw off work-life balance include:
- A longer than usual commute to and from work, or frequent travel demands
- A corporate culture that doesn’t value or honor family or marriage or personal time
- An unhealthy work environment that’s filled with additional drama or stress
It’s hard enough to find a job, but when you are looking around and interviewing for positions, be sure to think about how a job may or may not affect your work life balance. A job should be a positive experience, not an exhausting one.
